Character: Fakir. Sometimes also referred to in the series as ‘The Knight’.

Series: Princess Tutu

Version: Anime, right after the end

Age: 14 (Or so. They never mention his age in the anime, but most places seem to place the characters in the 13-15 range.)

Gender: Male

Sexuality: Straight. He’s never in an obvious romantic pairing in the series, but it’s hinted that he might have feelings for a female character. (Depending on how you take certain scenes, you could also consider him bi. They can be taken either way, though—I’ve decided that, at least in my mind, he’s just straight.)

Appearance: Fakir has thick black hair and small, narrow green eyes. He keeps his hair loosely tied behind his back, and allows some of the bangs to fall around his face. His skin is tan, suggesting (along with his name) that he may have some Arab blood in him—although he, himself, doesn’t know much about his parent’s heritage. Covering a large part of his chest and back is a pale birthmark. It’s shaped like a wound left by a large claw.

When he’s not wearing his school uniform, he wears a tattered blue top and black pants. The left sleeve of his top has been partially cut off, and bits of fabric still hang from his arm. On his feet are black shoes, flexible, but sturdy.

Personality: Outwardly, Fakir is grim and serious, giving him a ‘mysterious’ appearance that (coupled with his good looks) made him very popular among the girls at his school. However, he’s so serious to the point that he comes across as being anti-social, and maybe even a little scary. He also can have a violent temper when provoked, although he matured enough during his adventures that he now has managed to keep his temper (mostly) in check. At least some of the time.

Inwardly, however, he’s not nearly as imposing as he likes to appear. It takes him a while to become attached to people, but when he does he’s very protective, almost to an extreme. It’s these people who get to see him smile (although even then, it’s a special occasion when he does). At times very insecure, Fakir worries often about not being useful enough and hates being told he’s inferior. Because of this, he has a drive to be the best, and he’s when assigned a task or role, he pushes himself to become better at it.

He also has a bookish side, and during his adventures discovered an almost uncanny skill at writing. Now that his adventures are over (or so he thinks), he can often be found writing by himself.

Abilities/Weaponry: Fakir is acrobatic, graceful, and strong, having been trained in both ballet and fencing for many years. While he gave up the idea of living by his sword to take up writing instead, he still can use a sword if forced to. In his own world, he actually got to the point where he could slightly control the world around him by writing, but between the influence of Drosselmeyer disappearing, and now being placed in a world that is not his own, this skill has disappeared.

Weaknesses: Although Fakir puts on a front of being fearless, he’s actually rather insecure. He constantly battles his fears of being unneeded and not skilled enough to protect those he cares about. If someone told him that standing in one place without eating or sleeping for three days would help him gain the skills to protect someone, he’d do it. (In fact, he HAS done it.)

He’s also not very social, and comes across as grumpy. Between that and his temper, people often assume that he hates them, to the point where some people automatically consider him an enemy.

Because of his past, he also has a fear of crows.

Warning: Since I'm playing Fakir right after the end of the anime, his history has a LOT of spoilers in it. If you're currently watching Princess Tutu, or if you're planning on watching it, and you don't want to be spoiled, do NOT read the history!

History: Once upon a time (and many years before Fakir was born), there was a writer named Drosselmeyer. He was writing what would probably be his greatest story, about an evil Raven and a noble Prince, battling each other to gain dominance. However, before he could finish the story, Drosselmeyer died, leaving the Prince and the Raven locked in an eternal struggle. Frustrated, the Raven escaped from the story, and the Prince pursued him. Their battle in Drosselmeyer’s town was as fierce, if not fiercer, than their battle in the story. Fearing for the lives of others, the Prince used a forbidden spell to take out his own heart and sealed the Raven away, shattering his heart into pieces. The town where the battle had taken place, Kinkan Town , was taken over by the story, becoming a place where reality and fantasy could coexist.

Fakir was born in Kinkan Town , and for the first years of his life lived peacefully with his parents. Everyone in Kinkan Town grew up reading The Prince and the Raven, and knew the story well…but they had not expected it to actually take place in their town.
Then, one day, crows descended on the town and began to terrorize the villagers. Discovering that, at times, stories he wrote actually began to take place in real life, Fakir decided he would help. He wrote a story where he was a great hero that destroyed the crows. However…while the crows came to attack him just as they did in the story, the story had a completely different ending. His parents rushed to protect Fakir—-who was overpowered by the crows—-and were killed. Fakir was so traumatized by the death of his parents that he didn’t write a single word for many, many years afterwards.

Charon, a family friend, took in Fakir and treated him like his own son. It was Charon who first told Fakir the story about the strange, wound-like birthmark on his chest—that it was a sign that he was the Knight from The Prince and the Raven reborn. However, this was not necessarily a happy fate—in the story, the Knight had been torn in two by the Raven, before he could land even a single blow.
This legend was confirmed when, one day, Fakir stumbled upon a young man that had no heartbeat, but still lived. Fakir named him ‘Mytho’, from the German word for ‘plot’.
As Fakir grew up, he soon realized that Mytho was, in fact, the Prince from the story. Although his heart was gone, and he had no emotions, he still had an instinct to protect others, no matter how great the danger or how insignificant the person or animal. Fearing for Mytho's life (and that he would share the same fate as the Knight in the story), Fakir ordered Mytho that he must only do as he was told by him. He took Mytho to study ballet at the Kinkan Academy , and rarely let him out of his sight.

However, the story would not be stopped. A new character from the story appeared—Princess Tutu, a minor character fated to turn into a speck of light if she told the Prince of her love. Despite this fate, Princess Tutu carried out her mission—to restore the pieces of Mytho’s heart to him, which had been scattered throughout the town and hid themselves in the hearts of others.
Fakir, knowing that the original story would lead to an unpleasant ending for both himself and Mytho, tried desperately to stop her—until Mytho told Fakir that he wanted his heart restored to him. Deciding that he had to accept his fate, Fakir swore to protect Mytho from the evil Princess Kraehe—the Princess of the Crows—and to help Princess Tutu (also known as a girl named Duck—who was, in reality, a duck pretending to be a girl) restore the pieces of Mytho’s heart.

However, through the course of the story, Kraehe poisoned the Prince’s feeling of love with the Raven’s blood, causing him to slowly begin to turn into the Raven’s loyal servant. Duck and Fakir desperately tried to find a cure for Mytho’s slow decent into darkness, as Mytho searched for a heart to give as a sacrifice to the Raven to help restore him. Throughout their adventures, Fakir discovered that he was actually the descendant of Drosselmeyer, and realized that he could protect Mytho more with a pen than he could with a sword. As Princess Tutu gave the Prince the last piece of his heart and turned back into a duck, Fakir wrote the ending to the story, where the Prince defeated the evil Raven and saved Kraehe from his influence, giving her a second chance as his princess. The town freed from Drosselmeyer’s influence and the story, Fakir moved to a house by a lake—-taking Duck with him—-and began to write his own story.

[Bear with me--I know this isn't the prettiest. ^^; I'm not great with HTML. I hope to update later with better pictures/a better layout, but this'll do for now.]
